Partner Spotlight: Whole Foods Market
As we reflect on how far we’ve come as an organization and look towards our bright future, we are so thankful for the many people who make our work possible. Purple Asparagus relies on many different kinds of support; monetary, in-kind, and volunteers – both in and out of the classroom – and we’d like to take this opportunity to highlight our partnership with Whole Foods.
Whole Foods in the Classroom:
Whole Foods joined the Purple Asparagus family back in the fall of 2011. Two team members, often times the store marketing specialist or healthy eating specialist, from five of Whole Foods’ metro store locations taught classes in five city schools that fall: Galileo Scholastic Academy, Greeley Elementary School, Jonathan Burr Elementary School, Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Elementary School, and Ruben Salazar Elementary Bilingual Center. In early 2012, Whole Foods Market Sauganash, a sister store located in the northwest outskirts of the city, joined the partnership.
Since the beginning of the relationship, the Whole Foods team has also led programs at Rufus M. Hitch Elementary School, the William H. Brown School of Technology, and at our newest program, the Franklin Fine Arts Center. In the 2012-2013 school year alone, Whole Foods programs led over 350 students on Delicious Nutritious Adventures!
Galileo Scholastic Academy was one of the schools selected for the evaluation conducted by the University of Chicago’s Center for Elementary Mathematics and Science Education (CEMSE). The exciting results are a testament to Whole Foods’ investment in our programs and their quality of teaching. Not only does Whole Foods provide us with amazing Lead Teachers, they also donate the fresh produce and supplies for every lesson plan to all five of their schools.
In January 2014, Whole Foods will be returning to six schools to run six months of Delicious Nutritious Adventures programming, and we are thrilled to welcome several new Whole Foods Lead Teachers to the partnership.
Whole Foods Outside the Classroom:
In addition to their generous investments in our program, Whole Foods has also featured Purple Asparagus at various in-store fundraisers. Purple Asparagus was fortunate to be featured as the One Dime at a Time recipient at their Chicago metro locations. Each quarter, Whole Foods Market Chicago selects an outstanding community organization to receive the profit of the “dimes” customers get off their purchases when they shop with a reusable bag. From April to June of 2012, Whole Foods shoppers raised a total of $25,658 for Purple Asparagus!
At the end of 2012, Purple Asparagus was also featured as an Eve Week charitable cause. Local artists designed limited-edition canvas grocery bags that were sold in the week leading up to the new year, earning Purple Asparagus $2,673. For several years now, Whole Foods has also been a sponsor of our annual fundraiser, Corks & Crayons, donating time and treasure to the event.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the Whole Foods staff who have given their time and energy to help us fulfill our mission of teaching our communities about eating that’s good for the body and the planet.
